A Helping Hand (www.reliefindiatrust.org)

This post is different from what I have been posting here. I believe in helping everyone but without telling anyone. However, I believe that everyone must be aware of such organizations as most of us tend to believe that NGOs are fake.

Today, I received a call by a man in his 30s. He introduced himself as a volunteer of Relief India Trust and wanted to share something. I was half awake and was more interested in sleeping than listening to him because it was my nap time. I could feel his confidence shaking and dipping after every word. He might have been expecting me to hang up on him. But I didn't. I am someone who would always listen to the person who has shaken believes and confidence.

He told me how a poor boy from Bihar has a heart in his hole and waiting to be treated. Yes, waiting because doctors at AIIMS need 55 thousand in order to treat him. They have collected approx. 30 thousand and hoping to collect more in a week so that he cane be treated as soon as it is possible. I probed him with open ended questions:

Q. Why should I believe you as I have come across fakes a lot of time?
A. Ma'am please check our website www.reliefindiatrust.org . You will get to know how we are involved in the various treatments of many patients around the country who have nothing or less to pay. AIIMS is one of the hospitals that has link-up with RIT.

(He also named a doctor who is involved in the treatment of this boy that I don't remember.)

Q.Why do they need to treat only this boy? There might be many who are still waiting to be treated.
A. Ma'am, doctors do not initiate the help unless they are sure that the family is really poor and can not arrange the cost for the treatment. Doctors charge them the actual treatment cost and do not include their fees.

Q. Is it fine if I donate you Rs......?
A. Thank you so much ma'am. This gesture is a lot for the boy. Please speak to our senior Volunteer.

Senior Volunteer spoke to me in English. I offered him that I would give him check and not cash. (I tend to doubt the motives of a company or a brand if it insists to pay in cash). He accepted happily.

I am only hoping that it is true what they have told me. May the boy gets treated and saved.

Update
No one turned up to take the cheque but I have continued receiving calls from them.  Additionally they don't have a database in which they can maintain who all have been contacted for how many patients. If RIT people are reading this then here is a suggestion- please maintain a database and keep a note of who is being contacted, for which patient, and the amount being donated by that person. It simply means you are not only concerned for the patients but also for donors as well.

Are you a part of any NGO? Have you ever heard of ReliefIndiaTrust?

  1. I received a call too and the guy said exactly the same thing. I checked out their website, did not appear out of the ordinary. What I find illogical is that since 08 May till today i.e. 12 may they are still stuck at 30k as collection.

    Positively smells fishy.

  2. Even I have been such persuasive calls from them. In India we are not new to extracting money on such pretexts. Many red lights would witness a young lady with a child and a milk bottle… and then children with near fatal ailment is an all time hit.

calls from Relief India Trust are very credit card sales style calling. Their website also has no mention of who is at the behind. These things definitely do not instill confidence. I strongly doubt their authenticity and prefer spending money directly for relief and social causes.

  4. @ Sanjiv: That's also the right way of being a donor. You really don't know where your money is going.

@ Shubhangi: Thanks for dropping by Shubhangi. The surprising part is that no-one came in front for the cheque but I have continued receiving calls for the same.

    Thanks.

  5. I had initially given Rs X through c card and somebody from the ngo collected my other details, address etc., mobile number and after few days had got a tax exemption certificate by post. But the Q is sitting at different place how to make sure whether a NGO is genuine or fake. God only knows. But as this trust is from Delhi if somebody volunteers to check the genuineness. but how?

The volunteers say they are on part time and it is honorary (no payment involved) and they are like students etc., and they at times provided their mobile numbers to call back etc.,

  7. My god... same story which is narrated at the beginning of the thread.. same thing has happened to me. they are calling me since last 1 week and insisting me to see the website and do the payment online. its my luck or what should i say that their online payment facility is either under construction or not working so i got time to open google.com and find something more bout this people and I reached here. So Should I conclude that these people are fake???

  9. I was also getting calls from them from last few days repeatedly. The person named Rohit has been calling me from last few days and said that he's a volunteer and a student.

They told me the same case about a maid's daughter who is 7 years old and has a hole in her heart.
And that they need around 55000 on one treatment and 6000 for another one at AIIMS.

They even mailed me the documents from AIIMS to prove the genuinety. And now after reading this post, I have my doubts.

  14. Same old trick. They lure you to part with your money. Best thing is DO CHARITY BY YOURSELF. meaning you want to donate X amount then find the right person by yourself who needs that X amount and give it by yourself. Do not depend on any NGO or third party to find person for you.

  15. I got lot of calls from them in past 3 days along with various sms. Not able to judge them......

  19. I just got a call from a volunteer can't recall his name. He asked me to donate highest possible amount to the boy named as 'Manoj Anuragi'. Story was same as mentioned in the above posts. I tried verifiying the website and found another one running under reliefindiatrust.com on informing the same to the volunteer he was first shocked and then tried to convince me that .org and .com both ae same. These guys are really fraud. I handed my phone to one of my colleague today as these guys were pursuing me for past 2 days. They were not ready to accept my donation of 200-300 Rs to which they reitrated to 2k to 3k which created suspicion. My friend directly called him G@#$% to which he disconnected the phone and later called again from 01203882124 and 01203882146 saying Saale teri hi aukat nahi hai and disconnected the phone. I tried calling the numbers from my cell but they kept disconnecting it everytime. Guys Beaware of these Frauds, Bastards don't end up spending your Hard earned money.

  20. At the very onset it appears this is a fraud/scam being run. Emotional and repeated calls being made on the pretext of some medical emergency to deliberately push people into taking frantic and hasty decisions.Their website gives birth to another plethora of suspicions:not making any mention whatsoever of the people administering it, background & inception, etc. Address given in contact information states only an address in Noida near some mall with no mention of a formal landline number anywhere on the website(only a toll free number which lends no credibility).Check the picture gallery showing its banners put up at various places displaying a different address and a few giving some trophies and classroom discussion to employees which looks like a call centre . Alarmingly, this is supposed to be an NGO , but there are no pictures of their office/NGO(inside & out),its employees actively engaged in the social work they claim they are involved in (as per their website), neither of the projects they have undertaken/ people they have helped. Just a few people inside a small shed standing and some people coming and enquiring about the same regarding organ donation awareness. What about the photographs of the real projects/social work they claim to be actively involved in like food and medicines to the needy rural people, clothes and blankets to poor,HIV/AIDS epidemic awareness and removal,etc..etc.. since they have so much of time to click and upload all these irrelevant ones.
Thankfully, found so many complaints about this organization and their nefarious activities reported on the web by good souls who are really bothered about the society in the real sense and was saved. One person has mentioned in his complaint that he had donated to these people but did not receive the receipt and later learnt that it was transferred to account of some TECHPROCESS SOLUTIONS MUMBAI IN.
Now,their call centre execs were calling up time and again. On enquiring the source of my number they stated that they have their database and references, etc and that they cannot name them as it is confidential & will not disclose. So,asked them to provide some proof regarding their organization's authenticity(trust deed registration under the respective govt office, registration with Income Tax dept for tax exemptions on donations,AIIMS and other named hospitals collaboration certificate) in documented/written format. Also asked for the cases they have helped as per their website, the letters of appreciation or some proof that they are authentic.Obvious inference is that they do not have all these so I have not received anything till now. And not a single call after that. I was ready to donate, why couldnt they provide the documents?
Everybody who has gone through this should come out and report it to contribute in this movement against this seemingly suspicious and alarming conduct of the aforesaid (most probably call centres) in order to ensure that these organisations indulging in such nefarious activites are nipped in the bud forthwith through public awakening and are forced to shut shop immediately.

By the look of the things it is appalling to think that people have stooped down to such levels for money.
Please be careful and rather donate to a well reputed organization after verifying their authenticity or better if you could do such good work in person.

  22. April 12, 2012 -Today I recd. a call from ONe Mr Anil, claiming to be a student volunteer, on the same lines that a child is in the AIIMS with a hole in his heart and needing Rs55000/- and still 50% amt is yet to be collected. It appears from the above experience it is a definite case of fraud as the same type of emergency operation with the same amount cannot continue since last one year!! I asked him to provide the online bank detais for crediting the donation. But he did'nt give any information.

  24. Hi,

I just made a contribution to these guys for Rs. 3000 assuming them to be genuine. Now reading all these posts I am not sure if I did the right thing. Anyway I will investigate this further and try and establish whether they are genuine or not. And if not I think the police should be alerted.

  25. For me too, I got a call today for 'Manoj Anuragi'. Seems fishy. How can Manaj have operation continued from MARCH 2012 till date.

  26. This is operating from Delhi. Fraudsters are making lot of money as by making such emotional calls. They are not traceable to police too is what has been told.

  27. How can these people be caught people. Www.Reliefindiatrust.Org the entire web is filled with people making similar remarks and it confirmed that they are frauds. Wonder how such scams go on. They will start something new afterwards.

  29. Recd a call today from a person from relief india. if we go thru the comments posted, you will find that the orgn.is still stuck at Rs 30K since 8th may 2011 (nearly 1yr has elapsed and they are yet to collect the balance 25K)...what a tragedy! Calls coming from delhi to gujarat.
how do they get our cell nos? Isn't it astonishing? I asked him to give the website details on my cell, which he promptly complied. And on opening the site i come across numerous comments posted by various people... anyway this site must have been opened by persons with dubious nature. the sms recd. by me is from 9910565570..sender's name VIMAL. i think we should be very careful to get caught in such matters. at the same time we should spread this message to our friends and colleagues, who may not be aware of this FISHY NGO..

  30. Those of us living in Delhi can help us. A trip to AIIMS/their Public Relations office can help us.

I've sent an email to the Director of the institute today. Let's see what happens.

  31. one lady named Pratima shrivastav having mobile no-08860392646 called me at about 11 AM on today -18.05.12 and asked me to donate for a boy of 8 years who is having hole in the heart & was soon to be operated in AIIMS , Delhi. The lady called me about 10 times. She was saying that she is a college student & volunteerly working with this Reliefindiatrust NGO. I decided to donate some amount for the help of poor boy, but due to some network related problem I could not transfer the amount to the account of this organization. The lady then handed over phone to 3-4 sr. volunteers who introduced them selves as college students honorarily working for this organization. Luckily I saw this blog & dropped my decision to make payment. I am sure they were frauds.
The people living in Delhi should enquire about this RIT organization & bring the facts about this organization before the public. Police may be intimated to take appropriate action, if found fraud so that public do not get cheated by these cheaters.

  35. Well all of you good souls, I am computer-savvy but did not think of checking out the credentials of RELIEF INDIA TRUST on the web. Extrememly foolish of me. They contacted me on 30 July 2012 and I donated a large sum. I got suspicious when they started to bug me, which was after they must have cashed the cheque. Now i know that i am an ordinary human being who can be taken for a ride as easily as a few of you did. Earlier i maintained a policy of not going through NGOs, and help people directly. Yes, now my resolve is stronger than before.

  36. Imagine, this fraud is being reported since MAY 2011, over 14 months. They are continuing to defraud us despite such useful comments by all of you people. There needs to be action now. Does anyone know how to go about it? Besides the family court there must be a cell in the government. Informed people, please help to stop such SCAMS.
